Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need a safe?
In the home most people have personal valuables of some sort be it cash or jewellery, important documents or simply sentimental items that are irreplaceable. Unfortunately it all too often takes a burglary or fire for people to then consider protecting their valuable possessions. In the office, computer data discs and documents may need extra protection in the event of burglary or fire. Protection for the hard drive of your computer should also be considered.
Many people today use laptops and consideration should be taken in the event of your laptop being burgled or damaged by fire. The laptop has become the number one target for vehicle criminals and has become a commodity in itself. Last year around 100,000 laptops were stolen from vehicles, that's over 270 laptops per day and 6.2% of all vehicle insurance claims were the result of laptop theft. The estimated value is £4,000, however when all aspects of costs are taken into account (loss of employee productivity, theft of confidential business information, lost revenue, lost data, procurement of new hardware and replacement of critical data) the figure nearly triples to £11,500. See our special Laptop Security section for further details and advice.
What does cash rating mean?
The Cash Rating of a safe relates to the amount of cash for which an insurance company will offer over night insurance cover. Please check with your insurer for exact ratings. Cash Ratings are determined by door and wall thickness, lock types used and the general build quality of a safe. The higher the Cash Rating the more secure the safe is.
The cash rating can be multiplied by 10 to show the jewellery value that can be stored in the safe.
For example if a safe has a £4000 cash rating that is the maximum value of cash which may be stored and you may store jewellery up to the value of £40,000 in this type of safe.
Which safe do I need?
When deciding which safe to choose the most important factor to consider is what type of items you expect to store in your safe. It is often best to buy a larger safe as you will inevitably find more to put in it over time. Following is a list of possible questions you should ask yourself before deciding:
- Has your insurance company specified a particular safe?
- Do you need a particular cash cover?
- Do you require fire protection?
- If yes is it for data (computer media) or paper?
- What type of lock do you want?
a. Key
b. Electronic
c. Mechanical combination
- Where do you want to locate the safe? i.e. free standing, underfloor etc
a. Free standing safes are easier and cheaper to install and more convenient to use
b. Underfloor safes are very secure and easily hidden but not always easy to use, especially for the elderly and disabled. More difficult to fit also.
- Do you require any deposit facility?
